ARTWORK REQUIREMENTS & SERVICES
January 2007
Art Services
| Artwork services and type-setting, if required, will be billed at the rate of $50(G) per hour. Minimum art charge is $25(G). Order acknowledgment will include estimate of art costs. Please allow extra production time when art services are required. |
Customer-Supplied Digital Art
| Digital art is recommended for best results. We accept digital files sent via e-mail, uploaded to an ftp site (see E-mailing and Uploading Files) or sent in on a CD. The factory is Mac-based but can work with most PC files from one of the programs listed below. Art that is supplied in any other format will require our artists to modify or recreate files for production (see Art Services). A printout of the file must be included for reference. Please provide all fonts (both printer and screen) and any linked TIFF or EPS graphics with your file. We accept Quark Xpress 6.5, Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2 and Photoshop CS2. |
Customer-Supplied Camera Ready Art
| Customer-supplied art assures that imprint is exactly as customer desires and leaves no room for factory error. Camera-ready art is clean, sharp, black image on white paper, photoprint, paste-up, or a crisp reproduction that is suitable for the hot stamping or printing process. Photo-copies, business cards, matchbooks, letterheads, newspaper ads, and imprinted advertising specialties cannot be used as “art” for logos, trademarks, or other imprint copy. The order will not be processed until usable art has been received. |
Factory Produced Art
| Factory reserves the right to select type styles and arrange imprint layout unless camera-ready art is submitted with order. If camera-ready art is not provided, distributor should submit a layout to show approximate type sizes and emphasis desired by customer. All copy should be typewritten and faxed or e-mailed. A proof is required on any art that the factory has created or positioned. Art charges may apply (see Art Services). |
Vector Files
| Vector files are preferred for the stamping or screen printing of covers. When using a vector-based program (Illustrator or InDesign), it is helpful to convert your fonts to "outlines" or "paths," eliminating the need to send fonts. When you do this it is very easy for us to cross platform from PC-based images to Mac format. Quark will cross platform; however, we may have trouble with your fonts. |
Raster Files
If vector files are not available, some raster files can be
accepted. For any cover imprints, factory must have a
high resolution (at least 600 dpi) black and white bitmap file saved in TIFF format. For full color inserts, art must be high resolution (at least 300 dpi) CMYK file saved in EPS or TIFF format. Any raster file must be 100% of final imprint size and no smaller. JPEG and GIF files are not acceptable. |
E-mailing Files
| Most files under 5MB can be sent via e-mail. For faster file transfer and protection from file corruption, put all required files into a folder and Stuff or Zip the entire folder. Please send art to art@journalbooks.com. Once the factory has downloaded and pre-flighted the art that has been e-mailed, you will receive an e-mail confirmation. If you do not receive a confirmation within 3 hours of sending your e-mail, call the factory to confirm receipt. |
Uploading Files
| To send anything larger than 5MB, files can be uploaded onto our website at www.journalbooks.com. For faster file transfer and protection from file corruption, put all required files into a folder and Stuff or Zip the entire folder. Follow the below instructions:
1. Go to www.journalbooks.com and click on Distributor Login.

the art that has been uploaded, you will receive an
e-mail confirmation.

Artwork Factory Assistance
| Call the factory for assistance with any of your graphic needs. The factory is not responsible for problem files. The order will not be processed until trouble-free files are in place. The factory will contact you as soon as any problems are detected and will do everything it can to try to resolve issues. This resolution may require additional production time. Changes made to desktop files are billed at $50/hour(G), with a minimum of .5 hour. |
